Following the 2003 summer heat wave, the National Institute for Public Health Surveillance has conducted different studies: two case-control studies in order to evaluate the risk factors among the elderly, at home and in nursing homes, during the heat wave, and a study on 9 French cities in order to estimate the health impact of ozone pollution and temperature. In addition, a Heat Health Watch Warning System has been set up for the summer 2004, based on an excess of mortality (all causes together) linked to temperature. In the framework of the Ministry of Health’s Heat Wave National Plan, the alert system has been designed to alert the public authorities three days in advance on the possible onset of a great epidemic phenomenon linked to a heat wave. Following its first year, it will be evaluated and improved for summer 2005. |
