In the summer of 2003 the very intense heat wave that affected Western Europe claimed about 15 000 lives in France. Excess deaths occurred mainly in elderly people with multiple pathologies, most noticeably in women and inner-city residents. The largest mortality excesses were in the Paris area and in the Centre area. Socially isolated people with low income were high-risk. It is reasonable to suppose that the persons dead in excess between the 1st and the 20th of August were already vulnerable, and were likely to die five to eight months later. The data presently available on neighbouring countries are often different, but they do not stop us from considering France the most affected country. |
